Med-EcoSuRe the project

Med-EcoSuRe (Mediterranean University as Catalyst for Eco-Sustainable Renovation) is a project funded by the European Union, under the ENI CBC MED programme 2014-2020. The programme is managed by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia (Italy) and aims to promote cross-border cooperation in the Mediterranean region.
The main objective of the project is to propose and implement innovative and eco-sustainable energy renovation solutions for Mediterranean university buildings and introduce an active collaborating approach for decision support, among key actors involved, in the framework of a "Living Laboratory (LL)".

Official Launch of the project in Tunis – Tunisia

On November 21st and 22nd, 2019, MEDREC hosted the kick off meeting of the Med-EcoSure project in Tunis. The project partners were gathered to present and discuss their roles in the activities implementation, and to plan upcoming actions and events. The kick off meeting was followed by a public launching event which saw the participation of H.E. Lorenzo Fanara, the Ambassador of Italy in Tunisia, Mr. Fethi Ben Mimoun, General Director of Crossborder Cooperation at the Ministry of Investment, Development and International Cooperation of Tunisia. Start of the renovation process at
the Mediterranean universities pilot sites – Tunisia – Palestine -Italy

Energy audits have been performed in the project university partners in order to investigate the behavior and the overall energy consumption of the buildings. Once this task is accomplished, the team will be able to define a final list of energy conservation measures to be implemented. The team of An-Najah National University prepared standard templates to evaluate the characteristics of the energy systems and the patterns of energy use for the buildings including: data collection from the architectural/mechanical/electrical drawings and/or from discussions with building operators, utility data collection and identification of the fuel types used, analysis of utilities energy use performed by building type and size.

Med-EcoSuRe team joins forces with university managers to launch the buildings renovation process in Tunisia

Energy audits have been performed in the project university partners in order to investigate the behavior and the overall energy consumption of the buildings. Once this task is accomplished, the team will be able to define a final list of energy conservation measures to be implemented. n February 13th, MEDREC organized a technical meeting with ENIT (National Engineering School of Tunis) team, partner of the project, and with University managers in order to identify the most suitable retrofitting measures to be implemented in the university buildings. The meeting included discussions about the importance of building maintenance, and it has been decided to create a database of maintenance technicians in all universities in Tunisia, with the aim of actively involving them in the renovation process. The technical meeting ended with a visit to all the pilot sites at ENIT.

Launch of a survey to identify sustainable building rehabilitation solutions - Spain

Solartys, in collaboration with US team, was in charge of prospecting innovative technologies from the Spanish startups that will be sharing their new applications and eventually developed R&D products related with Innovative Solutions addressing Energy Retrofitting of Universities’ Buildings.

This survey aims to identify the most innovative solutions in the different areas related to the efficient rehabilitation of buildings, technical data sheets have been prepared to be filled by entities marketing products in mainly the following areas:

Thanks to this mapping, the partners will be able to carry out a market analysis that will constitute a starting point for the following phases of the project. This survey that gathered around 15 innovative solutions and targeted more than 300 entities.

Creating synergies with projects

Med-EcoSuRe set up plans to create synergies with the following projects:

BEEP (www.enicbcmed.eu/fr/node/573) | ESMES (www.enicbcmed.eu/fr/node/571)
Green Building,(www.enicbcmed.eu/fr/node/565) | CLEAN project (www.interregeurope.eu/clean/).
HAPPEN (cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/213576/en) |RECOST (reco2st.eu)

The synergies foreseen include: regular technical meetings for sharing updates on projects and planning for possible joint activities (communication, training, etc.).

Establishment of a Mediterranean Cross Border Living Lab (MCbLL)

The core concept of the Mediterranean Cross-border Living Lab (MCbLL), is that working with stakeholders can produce more effective innovative solutions. The innovative idea is to develop physical and virtual tools to stimulate participatory processes, supporting university’ building manager with predictive tools and enhancing their capacity to plan and implement sustainable energy mix strategies and technologies in the different Mediterranean climatic contexts.

The MCbLL is an international network of people with knowledge and know-how on eco-solutions, connected through a platform and operating on local pilots, related to the renovations of university buildings in the Mediterranean area.

To announce the establishment of the MCbLL, a workshop will be hosted by each partner university for the «recruitment» among the national stakeholders and decision-makers sphere.

The project stakeholders

The Living Lab structure includes a strategic level and an operational Level. The strategic level, also called the Cross Border Living Lab, will gather partners of the project and stakeholders to collaborate and share knowledge directly with each other to propose and implement the most suitable innovative solutions in university Buildings. The operational level represents the physical living labs ( i.e university buildings), where the solutions proposed and validated within the Cross Border Living Lab, will be implemented.

The project team established a database of potential stakeholders, and launched an expression of interest to identify their involvement in the Living Lab activities, according to their field of expertise and interests.
